to the people wondering if the BEN file was real. it wasn’t. it was a made up story that continued to build. the creator jadusable made it into an ARG and we’re waiting for the game portion of it to come out. you can look up jad on youtube, and he also was a twitter for the ARG. look up WithinHubris on twitter.

About the Ben file: The writer of the stories finally admitted it was a hack of the game and he couldn’t keep up with it any more because he didn’t have any more money to fund the story but it was fun while it lasted!

In 1996 the Nintendo 64 was released and proved to be a successful console with Nintendo coming in on the 3D scene in order to compete with the Playstation and it’s advanced graphics (during those times). But in 1998 Nintendo released the game that would be considered to this day one of the greatest games of all times to this day. That’s right! The one and only…………Final Fantasy VII The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time

Ocarina was incredibly praised in the gaming community it almost looked like a second coming for the gaming world. It’s graphics (again for it’s time) were well detailed and the length of the land was huge, it was innovative for other future adventure games for it’s length and sidequests. Indeed Ocarina was doing well critically and sales-wise, so of course logically a Sequel would be needed cause…..HEY why not right?

Well two years later in the year 2000 they did just that. They released Majora’s Mask and what do you know…………..it went well sales wise! ALRIGHT MONEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. BUT HANG YOUR ON TO YOUR NEW BLOODY GOLD CAR AND KEY…………there was somewhat of a confusion arising in the gaming community. Some called better while others called it odd, it’s really the most oddest game in Zelda history, it’s literally the black sheep out of all the games……yes even more odd then Zelda II: The Adventures of Link. I mean seriously, I have yet to hear someone say Majora’s Mask is their favorite Zelda, I’m still waiting for it……….

So, I’m going to try to compare these games side by side, almost like I’m reviewing both of them and see why the confusion between these two games. So without further ado LET’S START!!!!!!!

Now understand this young children who were born after OOT, when this game came out it was like the holy grail of gaming. I’m not joking, what Call Of Duty:Shoot Random Dudes or whatever means to you means the same to us when Ocarina of time came out: HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP

But why? WELL CAUSE IT WAS FREAKING AWESOME. It was like stepping into a fantasy world. You could interact with people, collect money, get equipment and participate in epic long journeys. The music fitted well and Hyrule was HUGE. I mean it wasn’t just Hyrule field man, you had deserts and underwater places and freaking forests it WAS SO EXPANSIVE. So much to explore that you can almost consider it an adventure. And the gameplay was……just……PERFECT. You could only carry three items along with a sword and shield while all your other stuff you could get are in the Pause Menu. It was quite clear what to do:

Save the world, Clear weird puzzles in dungeons and fight bosses and collect important stuff. Basic Zelda stuff

But the execution was the important factor. You see it was quite a open world where you could take your sweet time with it doing all sorts of extras while being drawn to the simple “save her” scenario plot. I mean I could spend a year fishing and what not like literally:

Link: La-di-La-di just fishing

Fishing Dude: Hey you know you have to save the world Right?

Link: SHUT UP I’M TRYING TO CATCH A BIGGER ONE!!

Plus time travelling was another important factor. In order to progress to certain things you had to go back and forth changing important settings and get to places you couldn’t before along with items you couldn’t use before. You had an Ocarina that could help play songs to unlock things and you were riding a freaking horse…..A HORSE! So instantly all this kickass stuff made it a classic.

So obviously you assume I’m going to pull a “Fox News” and prefer OOT over MM right?

BLOODY WRONG MATE

Actually I have a warm spot for Majora. Kind of like how I prefer weird and odd women is the exact same way I prefer Majora over Ocarina, it’s so WEIRD. In it’s own right it has it’s own cult following and has a haunted story based on it:

Right about now I just made certain people who know about the certain tale lose sleep tonight and probably turned around after seeing this picture.

There are a lot of people who don’t know much (or aren’t aware of the existence) of Majora’s Mask so I’ll explain. It’s after the last game and Link is looking for a lost friend while riding with his trusty horse Epona (One assumes the missing friend could be Navi but I thought it was Saria), when all of a sudden he gets ambushed by a skull kid (Why couldn’t he have played Saria’s Song so it wouldn’t attack him?) who seems to be wearing a bizarre mask that later shows to have extreme powers (Oh that’s why…..). He takes his horse and ocarina and turns Link into a tiny Deku Scrub and ditches him with one of this two fairies he abandoned. Thus it begins.

One of the key factors in this game is masks. The happy mask salesmen plays an important role in the plot. He cures you after you find your Ocarina and creates a Deku Scrub mask after healing you. Now you have to find Majora’s Mask and save the world from oh I don’t know………….A FREAKING MOON CRASHING DOWN, AND DID I MENTION IN THREE DAYS? YES THERE’S A TIME LIMIT!

Stating the plot already demonstrates the difference between these two games.

So what’s so weird about this game? Well let’s start off with the setting. Guess what? Your not in Hyrule. That’s right your in Termina, a different place………..somewhere……..not in Hyrule……….like…..over there………after taking a u-turn at old cutler and-SCREW IT! IT’S AN ALTERNATE WORLD OKAY? Well one assumes that since the characters are the same as Ocarina except they don’t recognize you at all. Plus they are in different roles, so clearly we’re in an episode of The Twilight Zone. The key thing about Majora is how well detailed it is with the land, whether it’s the swamp or the Zora domain you really have to appreciate the amount of effort they built.

One major difference is one word and word only:Time. You have three days (Around half an hour or an hour in real life I’m not sure) to do as much as you can to stop the Skull Kid from crashing the (freaky ass) Moon from destroying the world. So really it’s like someone was holding you a gun point and pressuring your ass off to quickly finish or else. The helpful part is that you can restart time all over to day 1 with the help of your ocarina after playing the Song Of Time.

Wait a sec………..I HAVE TO RESTART EVERYTHING?

That’s right, while any dungeons you complete will remain complete in the sense of the important item required, everything else from the mini-games to amount of rupees or certain items will reset back. Now isn’t that a drag?

This becomes annoying since you have to do certain things at certain times and if you mess up then it’s time to restart ALL OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVER AGAIN. Sure there’s a way to slow down and fast forward time which is EXTREMELY HELPFUL but that doesn’t fix the fact that your constantly racing the clock for whatever task or mission. This kind of reminds me of Castlevania II where if you die you restart where you die but you lose all of your currency and have to collect them all over again (Good Lord don’t start me on that). It’s kind of like that here, you have to do certain things all over again to progress.

You didn’t do that in Ocarina, when you did something it was done….that’s it. No repeats unless you wish to beat a record in a mini-game or some stuff like that. You didn’t have to deal with fixing something all over again or making a deal all over again.

It’s like if you get up in the morning and you have to buy a bloody tooth brush ALL OVER AGAIN or a toilet ALL OVER AGAIN or tooth paste ALL OVER AGAIN. IT WOULD DRIVE YOU INSANE CAUSE YOUR LIKE “WHY DO I NEED TO BUY MY NECESSITIES ALL OVER AGAIN? DOES SOMEONE HAVE A BATH ROOM FETISH AND KEEP STEALING MY STUFF?”

Plus it’s a short game compared to Ocarina if you just skip through all the dungeons and ignore the mini-games and side quests. Ocarina was time consuming especially the freaking water temple-AH DON’T GET ME STARTED……sorry it still haunts me..

Those words alone have become the source of all evil for people my age

But the one thing that I really like about Majora is it’s atmosphere and story. It’s always depressing because you know……moon is going to strike us in like three days. You see Ocarina had the usual YOU GOTZ TO SAVEZ TEH PRINCESS AND STOP GANONZ plotline that is as old as saving Princess Peach, but in Majora not only did you have to save the world from the moon but you could help people with their problems. This fleshed things out as you keep a journal and keep track with all the good deeds you did. But this becomes annoying since your technically playing doctor Phil here and pretend you give damn about things.

Now we come to the part that turns gamers off about this game (I don’t understand why gamers are turned on by games), the freaking sidequests. Again if we skip the side quests then we can finish the game pretty fast, but if we try to do EVERYTHING then it makes playing quite a process. Because of the fact that you can do so much differs immensely compared to the optional Ocarina, sure you can scroll through but why not get everything be unstoppable as Fierce Deity Link?

BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT GETS ANNOYING TO GO THROUGH POINT A TO POINT XYZ.

Ugh, I guess the reason why people prefer Ocarina so much is it’s nostalgic value. It was epic when you hear the first few notes of the piano in the intro with Adult Link riding away with Epona and hearing the most beautiful intro music known to video game history. We all felt awesome when we killed the first boss and felt badass after finally getting the master sword. We rode epona a lot until we were knocked down by enemies. We raged over the complex hell known as the water temple and we felt satisfied to finally beat the REAL Ganon in the future. It was an experience we’ll never forget

Majora also had that feeling. We cried when we saw the Zora die, we got freaked out in every dungeon, we panicked when it was day three, we were annoyed and but satisfied with the countless side quests. We thought it was badass that we get to play as a Deku Scrub, a Zora, and a Goron. We rode Epona again as soon as we found her, and we felt content when we reunited that lost couple that was separated.

At the end of the day Ocarina is like that big-budgeted film that does really well at the box office and at the academy awards with the most wins while Majora is the underground well respected indie flick that while gets enough praise doesn’t have enough attention because it doesn’t attract the main stream. So which is better? I don’t you that’s for you to decide, I just compared them. I love both and hopefully people will get a chance to play Majora’s Mask and appreciate it’s awesome-ness.

I have seen a lot of really good Zelda theories. But, I’ve never seen one that connects the games very well. Here’s my theories on how the games connect and random other theories in each game. Some of the theories are my own, some are theories I’ve found that I believe.

Obviously, we’ll start with Ocarina of Time. I believe, as many do, that the timeline was split in two during this game. One timeline for what happened in the events where Link drew the Master Sword, defeated Ganon, and then Ganon being sealed in the Sacred Realm, therefore creating what’s known as “The Adult Timeline”. Then the other timeline where Link is returned to his present time, therefore created what is known as “The Child Timeline”.  There’s not much to say about this matter, the story/timeline is pretty straight forward.

The Child’s Timeline:
I believe that after Link was returned to his own time, the events that are known as Majora’s Mask are created. But, before I dwell into that, I’d like to go into what I believe happened in the time where he was returned, and his departure into the Lost Wood’s. I think Link, after accomplishing everything that occurred in OoT, started to become very depressed. He had done magnificent things to save the land of Hyrule, but no one, other than himself, would ever know what actually happened. Navi left him when he was returned to his time, and he had never made any other friends (or at least one’s that had recollection of what happened). So, Link was left alone and depressed. He ventured into the Lost Woods in search for a long lost “friend” (my guess would be Navi). What I believe happened is that Link became a Stalfos. It’s clearly stated in OoT that if anyone ventures in the Lost Woods without a fairy, they will become a Stalfos. I’ll go into this with a little more depth of what I think Majora’s Mask is all about. We start with the opening cut scene where Link is “dosing off” on Epona while wandering  the Woods. This, I think, is Link slowly subcoming to the Wood’s magic and on the verge of becoming a Stalfos. I believe that the first event of Link running into Skull Kid with Majora’s Mask actually happened, but nothing else. The rest of the events that happen in Majora’s Mask, I believe, are Link looking back on what happened in his life, but in a hallucinating manner. We enter Termina, a world that is stated to be a parallel universe to Hyrule in OoT, with many of the same people, and very similar places. I feel like the masks that are obtained in the game are actually Link’s conscious trying to find a happy place or trying to create another person to feel happy since Link feels like his heroic acts in OoT have gone unnoticed since everything after the meeting of Link and Zelda never happened. The rest of the game is Link dealing with the stages of denial and death (in this case, becoming a Stalfos). At the end of the game, Link is told by Tatl that they “both have gotten what they were after”. In this case, Link has finally accepted that, even though no one will ever know of his acts in OoT, that he is the reason Hyrule is safe, and that he can finally die without regrets. Skull Kid, also states at the end of MM to Link that, “I didn’t think they wanted to be friends with me. But, they hadn’t forgotten about me. Friends are a nice thing to have.” I feel that this is Link telling himself that some hadn’t forgotten about him (i.e Zelda, the sages, etc). He also says that Link, “Smells like a fairy boy who taught him that song in the woods”, therefore having someone else who hasn’t forgotten about the acts of kindness Link has done. So, in conclusion, I believe Link, after battling with himself, has come to terms with the events that have occurred, the fact that no one will remember him, but that he saved Hyrule, and is the reason everyone is safe.

Adult Timeline:
This is where I believe many people will completely disregard my theories, but here it goes. After Link pulls the Master Sword from the Pedestal of Time, another timeline is created. This timeline consists of Link freeing the Sages, defeating Ganon, and Ganon being sealed inside the Sacred Realm. I believe these events are the prequel to Twilight Princess. Many years have passed, decades, if not centuries, since OoT and Twilight Princess and the landscape of Hyrule has changed. Here is what I believed happened in the time that passed between the two games and what I believe are the same, and what has changed since the two games. First, I believe that Desert Colossus and The Arbiter’s Grounds are the same place. A couple similarities can make this valid. They are, obviously, both in the desert. Another is that in OoT a mirror is located near the boss room of Desert Colossus. I believe this to be the Mirror of Twilight from Twilight Princess. I believe that after Ganon was sealed in the Sacred Realm, the Sages held a trial against Ganon and that he was sentenced and punished by being sent into the Twilight Realm because, if you think about it, why would you keep Ganon in the Sacred Realm? In Twilight Princess, the Gerudo race is absent. My guess as to why is because, Ganon was the only male of the race. It’s stated that one male is born every century, therefore the only means of reproducing. If Ganon spent most of the time in the Twilight Realm/Sacred Realm, he would not be able to reproduce with any of the Gerudo, causing them to die out as a race. Another random thing I believe is that the boss in The Arbiter’s Grounds is actually the skeletal remains of Volvaga, cursed and resurrected by Ganon. As for the location of the Master Sword in Twilight Princess, I believe that the Royal Family had it moved. It’s theorized that the Forest Temple in OoT was actually a mansion, therefore making it probably the second largest structure in Hyrule, other than the Temples and Hyrule Castle. What I think happened is that the Royal Family had the Master Sword moved to the Forest Temple, which would explain why it is so close to the Lost Woods in Twilight Princess. It would also explain why you find the Master Sword in the Lost Woods in aLttP, which is theorized to occur after the events of OoT/TP. Now we move on to the events that occur in the game. Not much to say here, but I have some theories in regards to things in the game. I believe that the Fused Shadow and Majora’s Mask are the same artifact. Reasons to back this up is that both come from a tribe that is no longer in Hyrule. The Twili’s were banished to the Twilight Realm, and legend can become obscure over time. Another reason is that they are similar in appearance, especially the eye(s) of both masks. Another is that when you battle Majora’s Mask in the game, it bears remarkable resemblance to the Twili people. They, also, both give the wearer great powers. The last theory I’d like to discuss is that the Hero’s Shade from Twilight Princess is actually Link after he’s become a Stalfos in Majora’s Mask. The Hero’s Shade states that he is a ghost of a hero. He bears a striking resemblance to a Stalfos. He is also left handed, which most Link’s, including the one from Majora’s Mask, are. Also, his last words to Link are, “Go forth and do not falter, my child.” This could merely be the Hero’s Shade calling Link his student, but, I think that it’s a reference the Hero’s Shade is making that the Link of TP is a descendant of that Link.
